On 10 June 2018, Valais settled a question that reached well beyond its borders: should it commit 100 million francs of cantonal money to support the «Sion 2026» Winter Olympics? Behind that credit loomed an overall budget of about 994 million, including nearly a billion in federal support.
It was not the canton's first Olympic attempt: Sion had already bid, unsuccessfully, for the 1976, 2002 and 2006 Games. This time the Swiss bid was carried by Swiss Olympic and defended by the cantonal government, which touted «sustainable» Games spread across existing venues and at lower cost.
But the idea ran into growing distrust of Olympic gigantism and its financial overruns. A referendum put the cantonal credit to the people. A no vote would topple the entire bid — which is exactly what happened.

On paper the Yes camp promised reasonable Games; the No camp predicted a bill that would spiral. Eight years on, the Milan-Cortina experience is the yardstick — and it largely vindicates the sceptics.
The billion-franc federal credit, billed as a lost windfall, stayed in the federal coffers. Valais did not suffer the recession some supporters invoked; above all it escaped the overruns now weighing on Olympic accounts across the Alps.
What remains is the intangible — image, pride, momentum. That cannot be verified. What the figures say is that the bet on Olympic frugality has held nowhere it has since been tried.
